Planning for maternity leave when you're your own boss.

Maternity and Business Planning

Planning for maternity leave when you're self-employed requires careful preparation. This module covers financial and practical considerations.

Maternity Allowance

If you can't get Statutory Maternity Pay, you may qualify for Maternity Allowance:

  • Up to GBP184.03 per week (2024/25)
  • For up to 39 weeks
  • Based on your earnings and NI contributions

Financial Preparation

Before Maternity Leave:

  • Build up a larger emergency fund
  • Consider income protection insurance
  • Save extra in business account
  • Reduce non-essential expenses

Business Planning

Winding Down:

  • Give clients advance notice
  • Complete projects early if possible
  • Set up auto-responses
  • Consider subcontracting

During Leave:

  • Decide if you'll do any work
  • Set boundaries
  • Have someone to handle emergencies

Returning:

  • Plan a gradual return
  • Consider childcare costs
  • Adjust business model if needed

Childcare and Self-Employment

Being self-employed offers flexibility but also challenges:

  • Childcare costs are not tax-deductible (they're personal)
  • Tax-Free Childcare is available
  • You can claim 30 hours free childcare

Tip: Factor childcare costs into your business pricing - you'll need to earn more to cover them.

Support Available

  • Working Families helpline
  • Maternity Action
  • Your local Enterprise Hub
